Perito Moreno Glacier - Runways

It is an ideal excursion to see the Perito Moreno glacier without physical demands and with long time to explore the quiet balconies depending on each person’s rhythm.

Our excursion to the glacier departs around 9 Am from your hotel in El Calafate and allows you to spend the time you want to visit this incredible place, with several stops in viewpoints within the National Park and a visit to the runways, scenic spot peak.

The distance of 80 km from El Calafate to the glacier is a succession of lakes, streams, forests and snowy mountains. At the end of the journey, you arrive at the west end of the Magallanes peninsula, where you start walking on the runways which have a total distance of 3 km. They are at different levels and allow you to contemplate the glacier from different angles and balconies.

Minitrekking on Perito Moreno Glacier

The excursion begins in the embarking pier located in “Bajo de las Sombras” port, about 6 km before the glacier Balconies- where you embark for a 20 minutes navigation across the Rico Arm, enjoying breathtaking views of the Perito Moreno glacier’s front wall.

You disembark on the opposite shore, where specialized bilingual mountain guides welcome you and lead you to a small shelter. After checking the last details, groups of not more than 20, follow their guides along the lake’s shore towards the edge of the glacier. Once on the ice the guides put each participant a pair of crampons on, and explain how to use them.

The two hours circuit that follows introduces you to the fascinating landscape of the glaciers: streams, small lagoons, gullies, cravasses and plenty of ice formations of the most incredible blues.

Estancia Cristina Discovery option

This tour combines the navigation to the Upsala glacier area with a picnic day in Estancia Cristina, located on the right bank of the glacier. The tour departs, after picking you up at your hotel in El Calafate at 7:00 Am, from port De la Cruz, which is located in Punta Bandera. You sail in the north arm of Lake Argentino to the Upsala channel and reach the western front of the Upsala glacier where you can appreciate it from the boat. Enjoy browsing icebergs and stunning landscapes. Then, you will head by boat towards the Cristina channel and then to the estancia.

When you get to the estancia, you will have a guided tour to the Costumbrista Museum (former shearing shed) and experience a 4×4 adventure journey, admiring panoramic views from the Upsala Balcony in a 9.5 km travel with a gradient of 550 meters above sea level.

All Glaciers

This navigation is one of the most important tours that can be made from El Calafate and it is worth spending a day to get to these National Park sites that are accessible only by boat. The tour goes through the Spegazzini, the Upsala and the Perito Moreno glaciers, entering the bays that they form.

In the case of recruiting the tour transportation from your hotel, we will pick you up around 7:30 Am and will undertake the journey of 50 Km to Punta Bandera, where the boat departs at 9 o’clock. In the case of having your own vehicle, you must get to the port of Punta Bandera at 8:30 Am.

The first part of the excursion is in the northern arm of Lake Argentino across the Boca del Diablo, the narrowest part of the lake, then you will go to the Upsala channel and the Spegazzini channel where you are able to see, at the end of each channel, the respective glaciers.
